Radflek FAQ

What is Radflek?
Radflek is an innovative radiator reflector that is made from a laminated aluminium foil with a unique long lasting coating that preserves its high reflectivity.

What does Radflek do?
Radflek will help you save energy, cut your heating bills and reduce your carbon footprint.

How does Radflek work?
Radiators send out heat in all directions. When positioned against a wall, as much as 40% of the heat released by a radiator will be directed towards the wall. A Radflek sheet placed between the radiator and the wall will reduce the amount of heat being wasted in heating the wall by reflecting at least 95% of that heat back into the room. This means less energy is needed to heat the room to the required temperature.

How good is Radflek?
Radflek has been tested by the BBA (British Board of Agrément) and reported on by the BRE (Building Research Establishment). Ofgem has confirmed that Radflek is the most efficient radiator reflector on the market. Radflek is at least 23% more effective than any other radiator reflector available on the market.

Why is Radflek better than putting kitchen foil behind a radiator?
Kitchen foil is far less efficient than Radflek as a reflective surface. Aluminium foil is manufactured from rolled aluminium, which when unrolled has a high reflectivity (normally towards the high end of the 80% to 90% range). All aluminium exposed to the atmosphere has a thin layer of aluminium oxide on its surface. Aluminium oxide is porous and very quickly becomes contaminated by atmospheric pollution and water vapour. This contamination soon dulls the initial bright appearance of aluminium foil and, once it becomes dull from atmospheric contamination, that reflectivity is materially reduced. In contrast to kitchen foil, Radflek has a special coating that maintains its initial greater than 95% reflectivity for a lifetime of at least 60 years, as certified by the BBA (British Board of Agrément). As well as having no such coating, kitchen foil is considerably more flimsy as it is not laminated like Radflek (which has a 250kg burst strength).

I’ve heard that louvered or saw-toothed panels are the best option. How does Radflek compare?
Radflek has been tested by the BBA (British Board of Agrément) and reported on by the BRE (Building Research Establishment), and Ofgem has confirmed that it is the most efficient radiator reflector on the market. Radflek is at least 23% more effective than any other radiator reflector available on the market.

What is Radflek made from?
Radflek is made from a material used in the building industry, which is a laminated aluminium foil with a unique long lasting coating. It is made from seven layers, a special coating, then a layer of aluminium foil, then an adhesive then a polyethylene core, then another layer of adhesive, then an aluminised sheet of polyester and then a final special coating.

How long does it last?
A Radflek sheet has been certified by the BBA (British Board of Agrément) to have a life of at least 60 years.

Will Radflek work as well in 5 years time as when it is first fitted?
Yes - occasional cleaning with a damp cloth to remove the dust will keep Radflek working as good as new and reducing heating bills year after year.

How much does Radflek cost for consumers?
Radflek sheets come in 3 different pack sizes; 6, 10 and 20 radiator packs (based on a typical sized radiator) with all the accessories required for installation. Each 1200mm x 600mm sheet is sufficient for 2 typical sized radiators (what are the dimensions)
  • 6 radiator pack £12.99
  • 10 radiator pack £19.99
  • 20 radiator pack £34.99

Radflek is more expensive than other foil options. Why should I pay the extra?
Radflek has been tested by the BBA (British Board of Agrément) and reported on by the BRE (Building Research Establishment). Ofgem has confirmed that Radflek is the most efficient radiator reflector on the market. Radflek is at least 23% more effective than any other radiator reflector available on the market. It will also retain its high level of reflectivity because of its special coating

Where can I buy Radflek?
Radflek is only available to buy online via our web shop www.radflek.com or other online retailers.

Do you ship abroad?
Currently we can only take orders for shipment within the United Kingdom as our UK prices are subsidised by a UK energy company for sales to UK domestic addresses. Please check our international distributor list for distributors in other countries. If you country is not on the list we are unable to ship to you at this time.

How much will Radflek save me?
It depends on the wall and the heating energy source, but Radflek can pay for itself in six months.

Where does Radflek work best in the house?
Radflek is most effective on external uninsulated walls (with the worse the insulation, the better the effect, as Radflek reduces the amount of heat being wasted by leaking through the wall into the outside environment). However, putting Radflek on internal walls is also beneficial, as the heat reflected back into the room will bring the room to operating temperature more quickly. This is particularly the case if the temperature of the space the other side of the internal wall is lower (e.g. a hallway which is not kept at the same higher temperature or the next door property in a terrace).

How is Radflek fitted?
Radflek is easy to install – anyone can do it and it takes only minutes. The standard installation method is for Radflek to be suspended from clips that hang between the radiator wall brackets – no need to remove radiators or to use sticky pads or professional help.

What do I do if the standard installation method means that Radflek doesn’t cover my entire radiator?
The standard installation method is for Radflek to be suspended from clips that hang between the radiator wall brackets. We recognise that this means that the portion of the radiator outside the brackets will still be transferring heat into the section of the wall directly behind it but took the view that consumers would prefer a slightly less efficient installation if the Radflek sheet was not visible from the side of the radiator. If your brackets are unusually close together (and therefore far from the edges of the radiator) or low (and so not near the top of the radiator), you can modify the installation method by discarding the clips, cutting slits in the Radflek sheet and mounting it so that the radiator brackets sit in the slits. The sheet is stiff enough to bear its own weight, and you can leave sufficient material above the slits to ensure that any space above low brackets is also covered by Radflek. That way you can have Radflek behind the entire radiator.

I have floor standing radiators - can I use Radflek on them?
Yes - we advise that you put sticky back hooks on the wall (we sell these on our website, but you can buy them from any DIY retailer). Radflek can then be installed using the standard installation method but hung from the hooks rather than the wall brackets.

I have radiators that are wider than your sheets - what do I do?
For radiators with brackets wider than 1.2m you can either use more than one sheet with an intermediary support (such as a hook in the wall) or use our new product, Radstik (self adhesive reflective foil tape as reflective as Radflek) to join sheets together. Radstik is available on our website priced at £4.99 for a pack of 5 strips.

I can’t get the sheets perfectly flat like your instructions, what do I do?
Radflek does not need to be perfectly flat for it to be effective. All you need to do is unfold the sheet on a flat surface such as a table and run your thumb along each fold with moderate pressure and then turn the sheet over and repeat the process from the other side. The sheet should then be flat enough to be cut to size and installed.

How much do I need to buy?
Each sheet of Radflek is 600mm x 1200mm and sufficient for 2 typical sized radiators

How effective is Radflek on large radiators (e.g. 1.8m wide)?
The effectiveness of Radflek is not determined by the size of the radiator so it will be as effective on large radiators as it is on smaller ones.

Is Radflek easy to cut up?
Yes Radflek is very easy to cut with scissors but will not tear.

Does Radflek ‘flutter?’
No - Radflek has enough rigidity because of its laminate construction and will not to flutter
